The reason I think the Father of John was Thomas Clarke was when John Clark filed for a pension in 1831? he said that he was born in Lancaster Co., Pa. and as an infant went to Ohio County, Pa.. They were 10 miles west of Washington, Pa. The land was lost as it was later determined to be in Pa. and not in Virginia.
The Washington County, Pa. book has a biographical sketch on a Thomas Clarke who had a land grant from the Colony of Virginia granting him land in Washington Co., Pa in 1773. This land was ten miles west of Washington Co. Pa, . He had 365 acres that he called Appolos and it had improvements. This land today is the heart of Claysville, Pa. When the Mason Dixon line was drawn in 1779 he lost his land as it was registered in the wrong county or state. There is no further mention of Thomas Clarke in Washington Co., Pa. area.
John told this same story in 1831, some fifty years after he left Pa. and was living in Greene County, Illinois.

John stated in his pension application that he was born in 1765 in Lancaster County, Pa. As an infant he went to Ohio County, then believed to be in Pa. He was on the Crawford Expedition across Ohio. (As a volunteer as he was too young. Records show he was paid) He said that in 1783 he went down to Kentucky, near Danville, for a short period of time. (He would have been 18 years of age.)
He moved to Fayette County, near Lexington and remained about 7 years (1783-1790)
He moved to Bourbon County, Ky. for 3 years (1790-1793)
He moved to Fleming County, Ky. for 3 years (1793-04 to 1797)
He went to Clark County, Ohio for 11 or 12 years (1797-1809)
He went to Madison County, Illinois in 1809 and resided there for 9 years (1809-1818)
He went to Morgan County for about 10 years (1818-1828)
He went to Greene County, Illinois three years before he filed for the pension in 1831. (They had moved to Illinois and spent the remainder of their days with son Absalom)
I typed in the approximate years.

A descendant of Johns daughter said a lawyer was hired to write a letter to Claysville, or Colville) Kentucky to find a marriage record for John as Polly couldn't remember where they were married. No record was found. I checked Harrison County , Ky. for a probate for a Thomas Clarke in 1822. He named one son, John, who he left $1.00. He named three daughters, Deliah Pierce, Peggy McIntyre and Polly Boyd. He left two of them $1.00 each and his remaining personal items to the daughter he lived with. I do not know if this was the Father of our John. I don't know where he went after Washington Co., Pa.

When John Clark filed his pension application it was headed Clarke/Clark.
In a biographical sketch for Absalom Clark Jr. in Montgomery County, Illinois it states. that some eminent names appear in the past history of the lineage of the Clark Family, among whom may be mentioned Governor Clarke of Rhode Island and coadjutor of Roger Williams. Through a long history the descendants have continued to keep the family escutcheon free from dishonor.

If we are of this line then we are missing maybe 3 generations. There were four Clarke brothers that came in from Suffolk County, England. Dr. John Clarke was well documented as he was one of the four founders of New Port, Rhode Island, became Governor and started the first Baptist Church in this country. Only one of the four brothers had children. That was Joseph Clarke Sr. and his wife Margaret. He was born September 12, 1618 in Westhorpe, Suffolk County, England. He died June 1, 1694 in New Port, Rhode Island. Margaret was born ca 1621 and he and Margaret had married about 1642.

In the fourth generation above, Lewis Frank Clark married to Mary (Molly) Elizabeth Clark. She was the daughter of William Clark Jr. who was born in Highland County, Ohio, in 1814, married Mary Jane Umphries (Umphrey, Humphrey) in 1836 in Highland County, Ohio. They went on to Stephenson Co., Illinois (That is where Molly was born) Some records show Illinois and others Wisconsin. It was Wisconsin Territory until her birth year. They went on to Des Moines County, Iowa and died in Union County, Iowa.

William Clark Jr. was the son of:
William Clark Sr. was born in 1779 in North Carolina. He married about 1805 in Randolph or Guilford County, N.C. to Nancy Walton. After having four or five children he moved up to Highland County, Ohio.

Three of their oldest children married into the Fenner family. The Fenner family bible stated that this William was the son of Baptist Clark.
